Orkanger is a town in the Norwegian municipality of Orkland , in the province ( Fylke ) Trøndelag . The place represents the administrative center of Orkland and has 8385 inhabitants (as of 2019).

geography

Orkanger is located on the Orkdalsjord, a southern arm of the Trondheimfjord . The village represents a so-called Tettsted , i.e. a settlement that is evaluated as a place for statistical purposes. In Orkanger there is a hospital, a secondary school and a port.

Surname

The name of the place consists of the parts "Ork" and "anger", the former is derived from the Orkla river , while "angr" stands for "bay" or "fjord". The name has been used since 1920, before the area was called Orkedalsøren from the 17th century .

history

For a long time, many Orkanger residents' sources of income came from industries connected to the Orkla River. For example, fishing and rafting were carried out there, and from 1654 the port was used to ship goods from the Løkken Verk mine .

Orkanger commune was founded in 1920 , when the area was separated from what was then Orkdal commune . In 1963 the two municipalities were reunited and merged with two other municipalities again to Orkdal. The municipality of Orkdal was transferred to the newly established municipality of Orkland on January 1, 2020 as part of the state- wide municipal reform . Until the end of 2017, the area belonged to what was then the province of Sør-Trøndelag , which then became part of Trøndelag .

In the 1980s, the village grew together with the smaller Tettsted Fannrem in the south, which is why the two places have been considered a Tettsted Orkanger / Fannrem for statistical purposes. Between 2010 and 2018, the population grew by around 10 percent. Orkanger received city status in 2014.

economy

Orkanger is considered a commercial and industrial center. In industrial production, the factory industry , food production , the wood industry and chemical production all play a role. The port of Orkanger, which is part of the port of Trondheim , is used, among other things, for the export of chemical products and containerized goods.

The local newspaper Sør-Trøndelag is published in Orkanger.
