history

Copper ore was found in the area in 1652, and mining was carried out here from 1654 to 1987. Copper ore was mined, roasted and smelted until 1845. In 1851 production was switched to copper pebbles . This was exported as raw material for sulfuric acid production .

The dismantling was interrupted between 1853 and 1891. In the years 1931 to 1962, sulfur and copper were then produced in the Thamshavn smelter using the "Orkla process". Thamshavn by the Orkdalsfjord is 25 km from Løkken Verk. Since 1910 they have been linked by the Thamshavnbanen (Thams port railway). With the Thamshavnbane the copper pebbles were transported to the port and then on to the smelter. Today this railway is a museum railway.

From 1904 on, the mine was operated under the name “Orkla Grube-Aktiebolag”. The corporation later developed into the large industrial group Orkla ASA .
