Schwerin-Neumühle water tower
The water tower is located in the Neumühle district of Schwerin on the “Am Wasserturm” street. With its location on the 86.1 m high vineyard, it is at the highest point in the city of Schwerin and is still integrated into the drinking water network as a pressure equalization tank.
Construction and technology
According to the inscription, the 22.5 m high tower was built in 1880, according to other sources in 1889, by the builder Carl Benduhn. A two-shell brick building rises on a polygonal natural stone base, which takes up the style of the brick Gothic. The stones are clinker bricks in the old imperial format . Pointed-arched windows, blind niches and glazed bricks structure the masonry. An arched frieze marks the place where the water tank begins. The top of the tower is closed by a crenellated wreath . The iron water tank is riveted, it is an Intze-2 tank with 2 times 175 m³, so 350 m³ capacity.
use
A central water supply was set up for Schwerin when the tower was being built. The water from the Neumühler See was first fed through four open sand filters into a clean water shaft. From there it could either be pumped into the water tower or into earth containers on the side. With the conversion from surface water to groundwater supply at the beginning of the 20th century, the underground tanks were shut down.
Today the tower is owned by WAG Schwerin mbH. As the last of the Schwerin water towers, it is still connected to the Mühlenscharrn waterworks and thus to the city's water supply network. The water tank inside is used as a pressure compensation tank (counter tank). (As of 2007)
