Schwerin-Ostorf flat burial ground

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The shallow grave field of Schwerin-Ostorf is the relic of a subneolithic culture of hunters and collectors of the Ertebølle culture or the Lietzow culture , who lived in enclaves on areas in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg that are not usable for agriculture in the otherwise of the carriers of the funnel beaker Culture (TBK) used area for some time persisted .

The cemetery of Ostorf is located on the island of Tannenwerder, also called the island of the dead, in the southern Ostorfer See . The graves of around 70 individuals have been discovered here since the 19th century and systematically excavated in 1961 by Bernhard Gramsch and Ewald Schuldt . Another cemetery of this kind is in Groß Fredenwalde in the Uckermark . B. Gramsch and I. Nilius also see the possibility that the material from the Lietzow-Buddelin and Waren-Stinthorst (island) sites, some of which have stem tip variants , which have not been investigated, belongs to Mesolithic groups. The material and style of ceramic imitated by hunters can be distinguished from that of the TBK. Antlers and bones from beavers, badgers, ducks, foxes, polecats, roe deer, red deer, wild horses, wild boars and wolves indicate the importance of hunting, for which dogs are also documented. Various subneolithic cultural assets show specifics that set them apart from the TBK. In addition to the characteristic strangely curved double-bladed bone and antlered daggers, this also includes the peculiarities of the funeral world. Wolfgang Zessin found an accumulation of finds on the eastern bank, which he assigned to the groups responsible for the burial ground on the island.

Above all, the cemetery proves that there was no acculturation or assimilation of the hunters.
