West end
The Westend ( ) denotes settlements in various cities that were at least at the time of their construction at the western end of the city.
In addition to the German Weststadt , the term is particularly common in English-speaking countries , namely in London , where the West End is the extremely attractive western part of central London. Above all wealthy citizens settled here, as the prevailing westerly winds spared the area of the city from the smells and - with increasing industrialization - from smoke and exhaust gases. Today, the West End is known as the site of the most important London theaters and numerous sights and, alongside Broadway in New York, is the second most important musical metropolis in the world.
The East End of London, on the other hand, has traditionally been characterized by port industries and poverty. Westend has therefore become synonymous with wealthy , elitist , educated and culturally interested, while Eastend has been associated with poverty , social weakness and the proletariat .
In Germany, the Frankfurter Westend and Offenbacher Westend emerged from former residential areas. The Wiesbadener Westend consists of historicist buildings , the Berlin and the Bremen Westend have a mixed development. In the Hofer Westend , where the Hof Theater is located, the buildings were built in the Wilhelminian style and Art Nouveau . The Schwanthalerhöhe in Munich , also known as "Westend", is an old working-class district, just like the Westend workers' colony in Essen was one.
