German Central Committee to Combat Tuberculosis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Central Committee for Combating Tuberculosis (DZK) is a not-for-profit association based in Berlin that deals with the infectious disease tuberculosis in various areas of activity .

history

The central committee was founded in 1895 under the name "German Central Committee for the Establishment of Sanatoriums for Lung Sufferers" to provide organizational and financial support for the construction of sanatoriums for tuberculosis sufferers. At that time, tuberculosis was a widespread disease from which one in four working men died. The importance attached to the task of the committee is reflected in the list of members at the time. Under the patronage of Auguste Viktoria , the wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II , the respective Reich Chancellors and Reich Ministers took over the presidency of the association. In addition to supporting tuberculosis patients, public education and the promotion of science and research were among the declared goals. Gotthold Pannwitz became the first general secretary . Even Robert Koch counted later to the board members. In 1899, the funding of outpatient tuberculosis welfare centers was added as needed and the DZK changed its name, which is still in place today.

Tuberculosis in Germany

The prevalence of tuberculosis in Germany has declined significantly in the past century due to the improvement in hygiene in connection with the joint activities of the decision-makers united under the umbrella of the DZK. In 2010 the disease had an incidence of 5.3 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Germany . However, resistance to tuberculosis drugs is increasing worldwide ; this is also of importance for the situation in Germany due to migration. The number of new infections among children under the age of 15, which is currently rising again in Germany, could also point to a trend reversal in the control of tuberculosis and continue to justify increased vigilance in the public health system.

Today's focus

In order to meet today's requirements, the DZK works as a non-profit association (e.V.). After moving in April 2012, the office is back on the premises of the HELIOS Emil von Behring Clinic.

The DZK is primarily concerned with answering questions from doctors and patients through a network of doctors who specialize in tuberculosis. In addition, recommendations for action and information material are made available. In 2012, recommendations on therapy, chemoprevention and chemoprophylaxis of tuberculosis in adults and children as well as infection prevention were published in the specialist journal Pneumologie . The DZK's areas of work include statements on current political issues relating to tuberculosis care and support for the public health system, as do scientific projects.
