Frank Schaff : Tom Lambrecht

A German movie from 2016 is at eye level . The multi-award-winning children's and family film tells the tragicomic story of the ten-year-old child, Michi, who finds out that his previously unknown father is short . At eye level was u. a. awarded the German Film Prize 2017 for the best children's film and was the culturally most successful German film 2017 (measured in terms of awards and festival participation).

action

Home child Michi has to assert himself every day within his living group and fight for the respect of the other kids. When he finds the address of his unknown father, his greatest longing seems to be fulfilled. His horror is all the stronger when he has to realize that his father Tom is a " dwarf ", almost smaller than himself, and thus for Michi the opposite of masculinity and strength. While Tom, who had no idea about his fatherhood , is completely alien to his new role, it is immediately clear to Michi that he wants nothing to do with this anti-father. But too late, because in his first enthusiasm he had already written him a letter.

Michi returns to his living group ashamed. But when Tom shows up there and the home kids find out that his father is short , Michi becomes the target of ridicule and harassment. In desperation, he runs away. However, his attempt to break away fails and he has no choice but to move to his father.

Against his will, Michi now has to deal with Tom, his public perception and his shame for him. He tries with all his might and tricks to prevent his new friend Katja and her clique from finding out who his father is and denies Tom in front of them. Tom, on the other hand, who has come to terms with his short stature so far, is forced by Michi's blatant refusal to deal aggressively with his shortcoming. Over time, the two discover that they actually have much more in common than normal sons and fathers. But when it turns out completely surprising that Michi is not Tom's son after all and Michi's real biological father is found by the youth welfare office, their now close relationship is suddenly fundamentally and painfully questioned again for both of them.

background

A winning film from the initiative “ The Special Children's Film ” is at eye level . This initiative by the film industry came about in 2013 against the background that in Germany currently almost exclusively children's films are produced that are based on well-known templates. The aim of the initiative is therefore to make original material possible and thus also to offer children a diverse and sophisticated range of films to choose from.

The film was produced by Rat Pack Filmproduktion in coproduction with ZDF and KiKA as well as with funding from the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern , the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media , the Film Funding Agency and the German Film Funding Fund .

The duo Evi Goldbrunner and Joachim Dollhopf made their feature film debut with At Eye Level.

The shooting took place in August / September 2015 in Munich , Dachau , Mülheim an der Ruhr and Cologne .

On September 15, 2016, Tobis brought film Auf Augenhöhe to German cinemas.

reception

From the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) was given the rating of particularly valuable at eye level .

The FBW youth film jury awarded the children's film 5 out of 5 points.

TV Spielfilm described the film as a “sensitive, in every respect successful plea for tolerance. (...) The rousing family film meets its characters at eye level, and combines entertainment with depth in an impressive way. (...) Small film, big: a rare stroke of luck ”.

Peter Gutting (cinetastic.de) saw “a touching and surprisingly unsentimental drama that would also be enjoyed by a purely adult audience. (...) 'At eye level' is a film for six to fourteen year olds that takes its audience admirably seriously. Nothing of the confidently told story is in any way trimmed or trimmed to allegedly child-friendly. Everything is in the service of realism and authenticity . "

"Despite all seriousness, there is still room for sensitive humor and well-placed situational comedy", says Thomas Raab (pcgames.de), "a film with a lot of heart and charm."

Magdalena Miedl ( skip - Das Kinomagazin , Vienna ) thinks that the writer and director duo “have succeeded in creating a funny, lifelike and tender film that is about masculinity and being a role model, about unexpected fatherhood , about being different and about prejudices and about the fact that it is often it is better to address differences in order to be able to deal with them - a ravishing plea for tolerance and inclusion , and a film that describes without cramp and without whitewash what harassment small people have to endure day after day. "

According to Rochus Wolf ( Filmstarts.de ), “the makers dare to simply leave many of the ambivalences for themselves: Not all problems are resolved in the end, even if 'at eye level' ends with a child-friendly happy ending. Michi is often unjust and cowardly, Tom hurt and unjust. Nevertheless, they find each other - and at the end of the film, their relatives are no longer the main reason that binds them together. That's what makes people tick - and this film manages to present complex characters with understandable intentions right down to the supporting roles. "

According to Bianka Piringer (kino-zeit.de) “the film provides the important and, despite small flaws, moving proof of how much there is to be discovered in children's films if only someone dares to leave the domain of bouncy castles. (...) Luis Vorbach plays Michi with a powerful presence, childlike wit and a good dose of thoughtfulness. The Canadian Jordan Prentice exudes a deep seriousness as Tom, which has an impact on the whole story. It is even intensified due to a surprising twist in the last section. "

For Horst Peter Koll ( film-dienst ) the film “brings an independent temperament to (children's) cinema, it entertains and touches. Without detours. (...) All of this develops neither as a gloomy social drama nor as a (pseudo) documentary image of reality, but rather as a spirited, optimistic, life-affirming drama about tolerance, honesty and openness. "

Corinna Gerhards (Ruhrpottkids) writes: “In this film, both sides are delicately illuminated without falling into sentimentalism. The fear of their own inadequacy on the part of the parents as well as the child's realization that their own parents have weaknesses and mistakes make it a universal, touching fable for small and large viewers. "
