Since 1998, the German Human Rights Film Award has honored outstanding productions on human rights issues. In this way, it documents and recognizes the commitment of committed filmmakers to upholding human rights . At the same time, it directs public interest to human rights violations and human rights work and thus promotes the social debate on these issues.

The German Human Rights Film Prize is awarded every two years in Nuremberg .

Goals and content

The German Human Rights Film Prize is awarded in the categories of feature films, short films, magazine articles, universities (film or art schools) and amateurs, in which the topic of human rights is implemented in an outstanding manner in terms of both content and form.

The German Human Rights Film Prize raises awareness of the importance of human rights in public and in politics. Film and television have a particular impact on social perception. With the award of outstanding film productions on the broad topic of human rights, the award emphasizes the importance of the information, educational and control functions of the media.

Young people in particular are committed to dealing with human rights issues. The German Human Rights Film Award encourages you to develop the topic through your own film projects and to submit it in the amateur category. In order to introduce young people to the cinematic implementation of human rights issues, the organizers offer media educational support. Active use of the medium of film in connection with the content-related discussion of human rights strengthens the media competence of young people and sensitizes them to questions of media consumption, the communication of content and the design of human coexistence.

The award-winning films are offered to the public together with didactic materials for use in schools, at festivals or other events. As a result, the prize provides impetus for educational work in and outside of school.
