Cahier Africain (kaje afʁikɛ) is a documentary film by Heidi Specogna from the year 2016 . It deals with the crimes of Congolese mercenaries documented in an exercise book between October 2002 and March 2003 against 300 Central African women, girls and men. From 2008 the film accompanies the protagonists Amzine and Arlette for several years .
content
The young Muslim woman Amzine is reminded daily of the suffering she entrusted to the “Cahier Africain” (German: African booklet) through her daughter Fane, now 12 years old, who emerged from the rape.
Arlette, a young Christian, has suffered excruciatingly for years from an unhealed gunshot wound to her knee. After a successful operation in Berlin, she hopes for a pain-free life.
While the two protagonists master their everyday lives and the prosecution of war crimes begins at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, war breaks out again in the Central African Republic . The film follows Amzine, Fane and Arlette through the turmoil and suffering of the war and documents everyday life in central Africa, which has been destabilized and war-torn by coups .
background
300 brave Central African women, girls and men documented the crimes of Congolese mercenaries during the armed conflict from October 2002 to March 2003 in a school notebook. This African notebook - "Cahier Africain" - was the starting point for the Swiss filmmaker Heidi Specogna for the documentary of the same name.
criticism
In 2016, the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) awarded Cahier Africain the “rating particularly valuable”: “CAHIER AFRICAIN - an immensely important documentary. A cleverly reflected piece of contemporary history. And a moving film. ”The jury's statement continues:“ The high quality of the research moves this difficult subject. [...] Despite all the suffering, there is an everyday life which, in its casualness, explains important connections and does not moralize the big questions of the film. So intensely connected and incredibly close to the people in Africa you have certainly not often been.
