Working Children in Matagalpa is a 35-minute documentary by Volker Hoffmann from 1999 . Hoffmann was a prominent member of the Wuppertal association Halbbild, which received the German Human Rights Film Prize 2000 for the film .

action

The film describes the everyday life of children in Matagalpa / Nicaragua and their self-organized struggle to improve their working and living conditions from the perspective of the children themselves. Volker Hoffmann lets the children take center stage, adults do not have a say.

background

The making of the film is related to the city partnership between the cities of Wuppertal and Matagalpa and the resulting center Las Hormiguitas - Center for Working Children (German: "The little ants"), which the city of Wuppertal has supported with an annual amount since 1992.

Manuel, one of the children who participated in the film, was invited to a trip to Wuppertal, where he shined shoes on the street to draw attention to the situation of the working children in Matagalpa. The conversations with the passers-by were recorded on video.

criticism

To justify the award of the prize, the jury stated that the documentation was professionally crafted and that it impressed with the successful balance between interview sequences and commentary.

The film portrays young people who are aware of their rights and who fight for their own future with great self-confidence. In this way, Volker Hoffmann's film is very different from everyday documentaries about children in South and Central America .
