Udo van Kampen (born April 4, 1949 in Bad Kreuznach , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German journalist .

After graduating from the Gustav-Stresemann-Wirtschaftsgymnasium in Mainz, van Kampen studied economics and business education at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . Since 1976 he has been a business editor at ZDF . At first he was a member of the ZDF business editorial team, and later he co-founded the business magazine WISO . In 1987 he became a correspondent at the ZDF studio in Brussels , which he headed from 1992 to 1995. After eight years as head of the ZDF studio in New York from August 1995 to April 2003, from where he reported live about the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , he was again head of the studio in Brussels from May 2003 to December 2014, which is responsible for reporting on the institutions of the EU and NATO as well as current events in the Benelux countries. Van Kampen retired on January 1st, 2015. He then moved to the Bertelsmann Foundation as a “Senior Fellow to the Board” . Van Kampen has also been an Associate Partner at the international management consultancy Kekst CNC since 2015 .

Van Kampen used to be the drummer in the music group Moodies .

Trivia and Criticism

Van Kampen attracted attention when he sang a birthday song for Chancellor Angela Merkel on July 17, 2014 during a press conference . The media criticized him for not maintaining the critical distance to the powerful as a journalist.
