The World No Tobacco Day takes place every year on 31 May; the World Health Organization (WHO, from English World Health Organization) launched it in 1987.

activities

Similar to World Drugs Day , World No Tobacco Day gives rise to campaigns and press releases from health organizations and initiatives every year.

In Germany, the non-smoking alliance (ABNR) and the German Cancer Aid Foundation have been coordinating activities aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of tobacco consumption, especially for children and young people, for over 20 years. On World No Tobacco Day 2019, the organizations appealed to the legislature to introduce a comprehensive tobacco advertising ban in Germany and to promote health prevention more intensively.

In addition to the demands for a legal basis, the participation of individuals and institutions in actions to protect non-smokers is on the agenda. For example, posters are to be hung up that advertise facilities, institutions or club premises to be declared smoke-free zones. There are also various information events that have been encouraged to take their own initiatives through the awareness-raising activities of the German Cancer Aid. Many non-smoking associations provide information about the dangers of tobacco smoking and try to encourage smokers to quit. Germany also provides international cooperation in the fight against smoking and cancer.

On the occasion of World Non smoking day on May 31, 2016 called World Health Organization and the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control ( WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control ) on countries to focus on the introduction of plain packaging prepare for tobacco products. Since 2017, current materials have been made available free of charge in cooperation with the German Cancer Aid Foundation, the German Cancer Research Center and the German Cancer Society (DKG) Berlin.

motto

World No Tobacco Day has a different motto every year . It is established at the international level by the WHO. The German Cancer Aid and the Non-Smoking Alliance set the motto for Germany and provide up-to-date information material (posters, leaflets and brochures) free of charge for campaigns on World No Tobacco Day. The motto issued in Germany for 2017 was: “Smoking costs. No smoking costs nothing! ”It made clear the range of costs of smoking: from the individual burdens from spending on tobacco products to the price for the general public due to health costs to the ecological consequences of tobacco growing, tobacco production and disposal of tobacco products.

Criticism and demands

On World No Tobacco Day 2014, the ABNR had already criticized the fact that federal and state politicians had insufficient results in the fight against smoking. At the same time, the more than ten large organizations united in the action alliance affirmed the need to intensify the fight against tobacco consumption. They called on the federal government and parliaments to drastically increase the tobacco tax in order to reduce the consumption of cigarettes, which is harmful to health. One third of the adult population in Germany smokes (30.1 percent). That's about 24 million adults. Cigarette smoking in Germany leads to more deaths each year than AIDS, alcohol, illegal drugs, traffic accidents, murders and suicides combined. Every year over 100,000 people die prematurely from the effects of active smoking and at least 3,300 people from the effects of passive smoking.

The WHO dedicated World No Tobacco Day 2015 with the motto “ Stop illicit trade of tobacco products ” to combating the black trade in tobacco . The non-smoking alliance and the German Cancer Aid have decided against adopting this motto for Germany. Instead, they refer to the possible dangers of the e-cigarette with the claim "E-cigarettes and e-shishas: chemistry for the lungs" . This national solo effort is particularly strongly criticized from the "steaming scene", because in a striking and polemical way a tobacco-free stimulant is placed in the focus of World No Tobacco Day, which is neither smoked nor produced secondhand smoke, but on the contrary could be a less harmful alternative for smokers.
