history

Extensive information to citizens about the dangers of cancer was already part of the concept of the German Cancer Aid when it was founded on September 25, 1974 by the X-ray doctor Mildred Scheel (1932–1985). The wife of the then Federal President wanted the "comprehensively informed patient who was problem-conscious and could freely talk to the doctor about cancer". The German Cancer Aid stood out as the largest citizens' initiative against cancer in Europe, also through its leading educational work and the promotion of cancer research with donations from citizens.

Financing and design

The advice is financed and designed by Krebshilfe from private donations. It is a principle of the aid organization not to accept any donations from the pharmaceutical industry and similar bodies in order to remain independent of any interest groups in their educational work.
