Claus Spahn (born May 15, 1940 in Bottrop ) is a German journalist and author . He is also a former television editor for WDR , presenter and producer, who was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2001 . He has been married to communications specialist Renate-Beatrice Piesker since 1990 . He has a daughter Christiane Spahn-Rempen. His brother is the television presenter and journalist Thomas Spahn .

Life

Spahn studied theater history, German, philosophy and art history at the University of Cologne and was established in 1969 with a thesis on the theater history of the Ruhr until 1933 Dr. phil. PhD . From 1969 to 2005 he was television editor for WDR. He produced numerous series, portraits, documentaries and programs on culture and cultural policy.

He made a name for himself nationally and internationally with chess programs . From 1983 to 2005 he hosted the annual live program Chess of the Grand Masters , in which Anatoli Karpow , Viswanathan Anand and Wladimir Kramnik played for a television trophy. Due to his initiative and under his direction, West German television regularly broadcasts from the World Chess Championships and the Dortmund Chess Days .

Spahn wrote and produced, among other things, the series The Parents Driving License (1976) and Nobody Should Be Next (1978), for which he received the silver medal of the German Cancer Aid from Mildred Scheel . With Lida Winiewicz , Spahn wrote the twelve-part television series When Love falls (1978), with Ruth Maria Kubitschek , Brigitte Mira , Dirk Dautzenberg and Gudrun Landgrebe in one of her first television roles.

For the television series on the Federal Data Protection Act, Computers Can't Forget , Spahn received the German Industrial Film Prize in 1978 . With the series No fear of flying (1979), Spahn and Rainer Pieritz founded the seminars in Germany to reduce the fear of flying. In this series Rudolf Braunburg worked as a flight captain.

In the TV series Finally 18 - and what now? - with Thomas Gottschalk - which Spahn wrote with Hansjörg Martin for WDR, Dietmar Bär had his first television appearance in 1982. With Hansjörg Martin, Spahn also wrote and produced the series Und die Moral von der Geschicht , with u. a. Achim Strietzel . In 1988/1989 Claus Spahn also developed and was responsible for the WDR Sunday TV show WDR Publik ; the later WDR summer show Hollymünd . In this information and entertainment show, interesting personalities and singers were presented live in Cologne-Bocklemünd in front of an audience for years and was above all an experimental stage for young talents and presenters.

With his 26-part series Puzzle - A Brain Game for 3xKluge , Spahn designed and wrote a completely new kind of quiz show. Here three candidates - Brigitte Hamann , Franz Herre and Paul Naredi-Rainer - were able to discuss and finally answer questions about politics, music, literature, humanities, technology and painting in front of the studio audience. The six questions were demonstrated, made music or played by various artists and related to a period of 20 years each, such as 1750–1770 or 1910–1930. After an hour, the 3xKlugen had “puzzled out” a picture / painting from the twenty-year era.

In 1991/1992, Spahn produced the multi-part series Funny Girls and Funny Boys with Nina Hagen and Dirk Bach as presenters, in which stars like Grethe Weiser , Trude Herr , Evelyn Künneke , Helen Vita , Brigitte Mira , as well as Harald Juhnke , Theo Lingen , Diether Krebs , Georg Thomalla , Otto , Willy Millowitsch and others were entertainingly portrayed. The moderator's texts were written by Thomas Woitkewitsch .

As an author and director, Spahn produced two impressive portraits of Carl Djerassi , the chemist, author, art collector and "father of the pill", as well as the Schubert researcher Otto Erich Deutsch - Deutschverzeichnis - among others .

Gold Merit Award from FIDE

In 1992 Claus Spahn was awarded the honor plate of the German Chess Federation . Twice he received the German Chess Prize (1983/2001) of the German Chess Federation , the medal of the European Chess Union ( ECU ) and in 2002 the Gold Merit Award of the world chess organization FIDE for his commitment to the sport of chess .

In 2001 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon by Federal President Johannes Rau "for his many years of outstanding journalistic and editorial work" .

Hobby player

Claus Spahn never played chess in a club, but is considered a good hobby player. His enthusiasm for the game formed the basis of his commitment to the sport of chess. Spahn is an honorary member of the Karpow Chess Academy Rhein-Neckar .
