The German Cancer Congress ( DKK ) is the largest and oldest specialist congress on cancer diagnostics and cancer therapy in German-speaking countries. The 34th German Cancer Congress took place from February 19 to 22, 2020 in Berlin. It was organized for the fourth time in a row by the German Cancer Society (DKG) Berlin and the German Cancer Aid (Bonn / Berlin). The motto was: “Informative. innovative. integrative. Optimal care for everyone ”. The Congress President was Andreas Hochhaus from Jena University Hospital . The complexity of the disease requires close cooperation from a wide variety of disciplines. "That is why it is important to me to integrate all professional groups involved in the care of cancer patients, such as surgery, radiation therapy, experts in drug tumor therapy, pathology, radiology and nursing," emphasized Hochhaus.

The 35th German Cancer Congress will take place in Berlin from February 23 to 26, 2022. The Congress President is Michael Ghadimi , Director of the Clinic for General, Visceral and Pediatric Surgery at the University Medical Center Göttingen .

New participant record

According to the organizers, the last specialist congress in 2018 with international participation achieved a record attendance: around 12,000 experts exchanged views on progress in oncology and discussed the latest results in cancer medicine over the course of the four days of the congress. Central topics were diagnosis, therapy and "survival". At the 2016 congress, 11,235 participants from all professional groups related to cancer were registered.

In 2020, the DKK was neither financed by the pharmaceutical industry, nor by medical device manufacturers, medical device manufacturers or similar sectors: According to the organizers, the scientific and industrial sectors are strictly separated in organizational, spatial, visual and financial terms.

history

The first DKK took place in 1951. Thereafter, the congresses followed every two years until 1971. After a short break, the DKK has been held every two years since 1974. The German Cancer Society was the sole organizer up to and including 2012 . Since the 31st German Cancer Congress in February 2014, the German Cancer Society and German Cancer Aid have been equal organizers of the international congress.

Cancer campaign day

Traditionally, the specialist congress also includes a cancer campaign day for those affected, relatives and interested parties. It took place as part of the 32nd DKK on February 27, 2016 and attracted over 2000 visitors. In lectures and question and answer sessions - for the first time also in Turkish - the findings from the specialist congress and from research were presented to those affected in a generally understandable manner.

DKK on demand

If the speakers and speakers have given their consent, lectures and meetings of the DKK will be recorded on video. They are archived permanently and free of charge on the DKK on demand internet platform.
