The Allard J1 is an open, two-seater sports car that was built by the British company Allard from 1946 as the successor to the pre-war V8 model and could also be used in motorsport . It was the manufacturer's first production model.
The car was equipped as the J1 3.6 , like its predecessor, with the side-steered V8 engine of the Ford V8 model 01A / 02A , which was also built in the United Kingdom. Later the Ford driver got the same engine. This had a displacement of 3622 cm³ (bore × stroke = 77.79 mm × 95.26 mm) and achieved 85 bhp (62.5 kW) at 3800 rpm at 6.1: 1 compression. Like the engine, the carburetor came from Ford.
There was also the J1 3.9 model , whose side-controlled V8 engine had a displacement of 3917 cm³ (bore × stroke = 81 mm × 95.26 mm). The engine, fitted with a Solex carburetor, was compressed to 7.5: 1 and made 100 bhp (74 kW) at 3800 rpm.
The front wheels were individually suspended from a transverse leaf spring on the particularly light frame. The driven rigid axle was installed at the rear, which was also attached to a transverse leaf spring. This resulted in a wheelbase of 2540 mm and a front / rear track of 1422 mm.
The superstructures were manufactured by the bodywork companies Paramount Sheet Metal and Whittingham & Mitchel . The vehicle shown here, known as the Two-Seater Competition Open Sports , comes from the latter company .
Allard built the model with its two engine variants until 1947 in a total of only 12 copies. The revised model J2 followed from 1949 .
