The Allard J2R , also Allard JR , was a sports car that was developed by Allard in 1953 .

Development history and technology

In 1946 the British car dealer and racing driver Sydney Allard founded the Allard Motor Company Ltd., a company that was involved in the construction of sports and racing cars. Allard had already built racing cars in the 1930s and has now put production on a professional footing.

The J2 , J2X and J2R models were created in the 1950s . While the J2 and J2X had bodies with free-standing wheels that outwardly resembled monoposto vehicles more than sports cars, the J2R had a full-panel body. The structure of the chassis was taken from the J2X. The engine was supplied by Cadillac . The 5.4 liter V8 engine had a 9: 1 compression and developed 270 bhp (199 kW) at 4800 rpm. and accelerated the car to about 210 km / h.

Racing history

The cars were driven in sports car races between 1953 and 1958. 39 starts resulted in three overall and class wins. Sydney Allard himself drove a J2R for the first time in a national sports car race in Great Britain, where he finished third. At the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans , Philip Fotheringham-Parker in a J2R was surprisingly in the lead on the first four laps before an early brake defect forced him to retire.

The Allard works team could not achieve any victories with the car; these were all achieved by the American Bob Bucher in races for the North American SCCA sports car championship.
