The Allard J2 is a racing roadster that the British Allard Motor Company Ltd. built as the successor to the J1 model .

J2

The J2 was intended for the US market. The standard engine of the models delivered in Great Britain was the side-steered V8 engine from the Ford Pilot , which drew an output of 85 bhp (62.5 kW) from 3622 cc. A 4.4 liter V8 engine from the Mercury that developed 110 bhp (81 kW) was also available.

American enthusiasts also built in V8s from Chrysler or Oldsmobile instead . The J2 sold in the USA were delivered without an engine. Motors were then installed on the spot according to the buyer's request. This approach proved to be very successful; because the US components made it easy to find spare parts in the US.

The front wheels hung on a swing axle with coil springs. A De-Dion rigid axle was installed at the rear, which was also provided with coil springs.

A total of 90 Allard J2s were built in 1950 and 1951.

J2X

Allard J2X (1953)

In 1952 the model was replaced by the J2X . The J2X's engine was about 18 cm further forward than the J2. There was a quick shift transmission, a revised front suspension and a larger tank. The J2X had its spare wheel mounted open to the side, while that of the J2 was not visible. Its 150 bhp engine accelerated the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 10 seconds and gave it a top speed of 178.8 km / h. The interior of the car was kept simple and there were few instruments.

83 copies of the J2X had been built by 1954.

J2X Mk. II

The Allard Motor Works in Montreal have been building the Allard J2X Mk. II since 2014, which they describe on their website as "a modern, hand-made version of a famous British competition roadster that moved the (spectator) masses in Europe and North America". The car's fiberglass body looks similar to the original J2X, but has different dimensions, and the chassis and drivetrain do not resemble the original. Apart from the company emblems, there are few or no identical parts.

The J2X Mk. II is the second generation of the J2X, which was built from 1951 to 1954. Allard engineers build around 100 cars a year and keep the model up to date with the latest safety technology. The new J2X has a RAM-Jet-V8 engine from GM that delivers around 350 hp (257 kW) of power and a torque of 541 Nm. Alternatively, a 6.1 liter Hemi V8 from Chrysler, a 5.7 liter V8 from Chevrolet, a Cadillac Northstar engine or a 5.8 liter V8 engine from Ford are installed. The cars accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds. The engine power is passed on to a manual five-speed gearbox, type Tremec TKO. The retail price of the J2X Mk. II is US- $ 138,500, -

Racing history

In 1951, Bill Pollack drove an Allard J2 with a Cadillac V8 engine to victory in the Pebble Beach Road Race . Sydney Allard and Tom Cole achieved third place in an Allard J2 with a Cadillac engine at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1950, although the first and second gears of the three-speed transmission no longer worked.
