Franz Hohenberger
Franz Hohenberger (born August 14, 1867 Vienna ; † December 17, 1941 ibid) was an Austrian painter .
Life
Hohenberger studied drawing with Joseph Eugen Hörwarter , then from 1883 to 1886 painting at the Art Academy in Vienna with Christian Griepenkerl , August Eisenmenger and Siegmund L'Allemand , then until 1891 history painting at the Art Academy with Leopold Carl Müller . After completing his studies, he stayed in Paris from 1891 to 1893 , where he was influenced by the painting of the Impressionists , and then returned to Vienna. In 1893/94 he created pictures with Josef Engelhart for the Somossy circus in Budapest.
With Josef Engelhart and Maximilian Lenz , he created the facade of the Vienna Annahof in 1894 (architects Fellner & Helmer ) and in 1897 of the Vienna Urania Volksbildungshaus (architect Max Fabiani ). In 1895 he made a trip to India , China and Japan . In 1898 Hohenberger became a member of the Vienna Secession and was its chairman from 1906 to 1908.
In 1902 he founded a painting school together with Ferdinand Kruis , which he had to close in 1916 because he was called up for military service as a war painter in Lublin . After the First World War , Hohenberger was awarded the title of professor. In 1938 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus .
His works are u. a. in the collections of the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna , the Austrian Gallery Belvedere , the Albertina and the Museum of Military History .
Hohenberger designed, among other things, the high altar picture of the Brigittakirche in Vienna 20 (1906) as well as a cycle of frescoes with Josef Engelhart in Schloss Kogl in Attergau on the subject of " The Spodder " by Ferdinand Raimund (1913).
