City tower Schwanenstadt
The Schwanenstadt city tower is the upper tower at the exit of the main square towards Salzburg in the municipality of Schwanenstadt in the Vöcklabruck district of Upper Austria . The defense tower of the former city fortifications is a listed building ( list entry ).
history
As you can see in an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer , Schwanenstadt had two city towers in 1674 that closed off the market square. These towers were three-story, each covered with an onion dome and a lantern. The towers were an integral part of the city fortifications. The city wall otherwise only consisted of a palisade rampart and only partially of solid masonry.
The lower tower blocked the road to Linz . The city guards and the watchmen lived in it . This tower was demolished in 1846.
The upper tower , which blocked the road to Salzburg , is still preserved today. The Mautner and the night watchman lived in the tower . The tower was damaged several times by floods from the Hinterbach and collapsed in 1732, but it was rebuilt afterwards. The tower was also damaged in the town fire of 1815, but was then rebuilt. In 1903 the tower was provided with an arched passage, which was expanded in 1949.
Today the tower gallery is located in the tower.
architecture
Today the tower is a massive four-storey gate building with two gable roofs. There is a clock on the gable in between. On the front in the direction of Salzburg there is a swan, the former city coat of arms, as well as the current city coat of arms, by Otmar Hillitzer. from Gmunden 1961, designed as a mosaic . There is also a city coat of arms on the side facing the town square.
