The Brussels Philharmonic (also: Brussels Philharmonic, former name: Vlaams Radio Orkest , Flemish Radio Orchestra ) are a Belgian symphony orchestra .

history

The orchestra succeeds the INR / NIR orchestra founded in 1935 and the Filharmonisch Orkest van de BRT founded in 1978. The actual founding date is 1998, when the former orchestra of the Dutch-speaking public broadcaster BRT was released into independent sponsorship together with the radio choir. "Vlaams Radio Orkest" was chosen as the new name and a non-profit association with substantial financial support from the Flemish Community was chosen as the legal form . After the orchestra had previously had its home in the Magdalena Hall in Brussels, its headquarters were relocated to Leuven in the former ballroom of the Philips factory as part of the organizational independence .

Dries Sel was appointed the founding director, while Yoel Levi was appointed chief conductor, although he did not take up his post until the 2001/2002 season. The spatial situation remained agitated, a move to Ghent to the Muziekcentrum De Bijloke was considered, but then the orchestra moved to the former Löwen cinema Eden. Financial and structural problems meant that Sel gave up the post of artistic director in 2003, after which Gunther Broucke took over the official business. In 2005, the Minister of Culture of the Flemish Community , Bert Anciaux, decided to relocate the orchestra to the restored former broadcasting house on Place Flagey / Flageyplaats in Brussels . The INR / NIR orchestra had been based there in the legendary Studio 4 since 1937.

In the 2008/2009 season, Michel Tabachnik took up his position as the new chief conductor; after Yoel Levi's contract had expired, he had already directed the orchestra in the 2007/2008 transition season. In 2012 the orchestra took on the new name "Brussels Philharmonic". Stéphane Denève has been the orchestra's chief conductor since the 2015/2016 season .
