Yoel Levi

Yoel Levi ( Hebrew יואל לוי; * August 16, 1950 in Satu Mare , Romania ) is an Israeli musician and conductor .

Levi began studying at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance , which he completed with a Masters Degree with Honors. He continued his studies with Mendi Rodan in Jerusalem and then with Franco Ferrara in Siena and Rome as well as with Kirill Petrovich Kondrashin in the Netherlands and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

In 1978 he won first prize at the international conducting competition in Besançon . In the same year he was engaged by the Cleveland Orchestra as assistant to chief conductor and artistic director Lorin Maazel , before taking on the position of resident conductor from 1980 to 1984. At the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra , he took on the position of music director in 1988, which he held until 2000. With the Atlanta Symphony he recorded a number of records with works by Samuel Barber , Aaron Copland , Miklos Rozsa , and Shostakovich for the Telarc label . After retiring as music director, he held the title of emeritus music director of the orchestra from 2000 to 2005.

After his return to Europe, his path led him to Brussels to the Brussels Philharmonic , which he led as chief conductor from 2001 to 2007. At the same time, from 2001, he was the first guest conductor with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the first Israeli in this position. While still in Brussels in 2005, he also took on the position of chief conductor at the Orchester national d'Île-de-France , which he held until 2012. In August 2013 it was announced that Levi had been hired as music director and chief conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra , a position he has held since 2014.

In 1997, Oglethorpe University in Atlanta awarded Levi an honorary doctorate in a festive address. In June 2001, he was honored with the Order of Arts and Literature of the French Republic.

Levi and his wife Jackie Perelman have three sons. Eyal Levi , a member of the death metal band Dååth , Amir Levi, actor and theater director, and Daniel Levi, a professional drummer.
