Professional background

Michel Tabachnik with Pierre Boulez

Tabachnik studied piano, composition and conducting in Geneva. This was followed by master classes with Henri Pousseur , Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez in Darmstadt. Then he became Igor Markevitch's assistant in Madrid at the RTVE Symphony Orchestra . In 1966, Tabachnik was brought to London by Pierre Boulez as an assistant to the BBC Symphony Orchestra .

In 1971 Herbert von Karajan invited him to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic . In 1973 Tabachnik became chief conductor of the orchestra at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. In 1975 he founded the Metz Philharmonic Orchestra , which he directed from 1976 to 1981. In 1976 he took over the management of the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris from Pierre Boulez.

Tabachnik led various youth orchestras and founded the Orchester des Jeunes de la Méditerranée in 1984, which is still a welcome guest at French festivals.

Through his work with the avant-garde of the post-war period (in addition to Boulez and Stockhausen also György Ligeti , Luciano Berio and Iannis Xenakis ), Tabachnik made a name for himself as an inspired advocate of new music. He regularly conducted premieres, including around 20 works by Iannis Xenakis, who considered him his favorite performer.

Tabachnik has conducted major orchestras such as the Orchester de Paris , the Concertgebouworkest (Amsterdam), the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Konzerthausorchester Berlin , the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchester de la Suisse romande (Geneva) and the NHK Symphony Orchestra (Tokyo). In addition, he conducted at the major opera houses in Paris, Toronto, Geneva, Rome, Montreal, Zurich and Copenhagen.

In 1995 Tabachnik was named Artist of the Year by the Centro Internazionale d'Arte e di Cultura in Rome .

From 2008 to 2015 he was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Brussels Philharmonic .
Since 2011 Tabachnik has been honorary conductor of the Noord Nederlands Orkest in the Netherlands.

Sun Temple Affair

On June 11, 1996, Tabachnik was arrested in Nanterre near Paris and in 2001 charged with “membership in a criminal organization” on account of his alleged membership in the Order of the Sun Temple in Grenoble . The Sun Templars had previously attracted media attention worldwide through four collective ritual acts of murder and suicide by a total of 74 members in 1993, 1995 and 1997. Tabachnik's wife was also killed here. As a result of the events, the order was banned and declared criminal. The prosecutor had demanded five years' imprisonment without parole for Tabachnik, the defense lawyer pleaded for acquittal. On June 25, 2001, Tabachnik was acquitted in the first instance. After Tabachnik's acquittal in 2001, the Grenoble public prosecutor's office appealed. The appeals court upheld the acquittal.
