Franz Tewele (born as Franz Teweles on July 29, 1841 in Vienna , † September 10, 1914 in Bad Ischl ) was an Austrian actor and theater director.

Life

Franz Tewele was the son of a military officer whose enthusiasm for the theater was to be carried over to his son. After graduating from the genius school set up for NCOs in Krems , studying for two years at the Technical University of Vienna and training with Karl Wilhelm Meixner (1815–1888) in Vienna, Tewele made his first appearance in May 1859 (in Rose and Roses by Charlotte Birch -Pfeiffer ) and worked in Brno , Preßburg , Ödenburg , Lemberg , Graz (1861–64) and Munich (1864/65), where his talent as a comedian was discovered and he was appointed royal Bavarian court actor . From 17 March 1865, he was one of first in lovers specialist involved, the ensemble of the Vienna Carltheater . In 1867 bankruptcy was opened against him, who lived not far from the Carltheater at Novaragasse 36. Beginning in 1869 exercised Telewe at the Carl Theater as part of the samples for Jacques Offenbach's Totos lock the Vélocipède -Head and although already practiced, suffered this fall due in the right leg a double fracture , the healing took months to complete. On May 1, 1872, the actor resigned from the Carltheater ensemble, initially to appear on German theaters and then to move to Heinrich Laube (1806–1884) at the newly opened Vienna City Theater in the autumn of that year .

As the successor to Franz Jauner (1831–1900), Tewele took over the management of the Carltheater in September 1878 (which lasted until 1882). Tewele, who is mentioned in Theodor Fontane's novel Graf Petöfy , was very popular and went on guest tours to the USA with his stage partners Josefine Gallmeyer (briefly his fiancée from 1872) and Wilhelm Knaack . In 1887 he came to the Berlin Residenz Theater , and in 1890 he joined the ensemble of the Deutsche Volkstheater .

On the occasion of the commemoration of the first appearance as an actor 50 years ago, a bronze plaque was minted in 1909 with the inscription under the bust of the jubilee: 1859–1909. Franz Tewele. In memory of his 50 years of stage effectiveness. German Volkstheater in Vienna. April 22, 1909 . Tewele lived with his wife Maria geb. Löscher (1850–1929), an Austrian soprano whom he married in Cologne in 1872 , especially during the summers in his villa in Unterach am Attersee .

Tewele only became ailing in the very last years of his life and was only able to move with difficulty, leaning on a stick. Five weeks before his death, he had moved to the sanatorium of the Empress Elisabeth Hospital in Bad Ischl, and was visited regularly by Alexander Girardi and Katharina Schratt in particular . Franz Tewele was buried on September 12, 1914 in Unterach am Attersee.
