Wilhelm Ritter von Wymetal ( November 13, 1863 in Rabenstein - November 8, 1937 in Vienna ) was an Austrian actor and director .

life and work

Wymetal began his theater career in 1889 as an actor in Pressburg , moved to the Berlin Residence Theater in 1890, was engaged in Brno from 1892 and in Prague from 1896 to 1905 . There he also worked as a game master for the first time. Engagements as senior director in Cologne and Leipzig followed . From 1908 to 22 Wymetal was engaged at the Vienna Court Opera , the later State Opera. There he staged Wagner's Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 1909 , his Götterdämmerung in 1910 and the Viennese premieres of Parsifal (1914) and Janáček's Jenůfa (1918). Both Götterdämmerung and Parsifal were very prominent: Richard Mayr (Hagen), Friedrich Weidemann , (Gunther), Alexander Haydter (Alberich) and Erik Schmedes (Siegfried) as well as the ladies Anna Mildenburg (Brünnhilde) sang in the final part of the ring tetralogy , Mme. Charles Cahier (Waltraute) and Marie Gutheil-Schoder (Gutrune). Wagner's stage consecration festival was also cast with Mayr (as Gurnemanz), Mildenburg (Kundry), Schmedes (Parsifal) and Weidemann (as Klingsor).

In 1909 he succeeded in having the names of the director and conductor mentioned in the programs of the court opera. In the Haus am Ring he also staged Puccini's Tosca , Lortzing's Zar and Zimmermann , Wagner's Tannhäuser and the Rosenkavalier by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss . Wymetal was also the "dramatic advisor" to the singer Maria Jeritza . From 1917 to 1920 he taught at the Vienna Music Academy . In the 1921/22 season he was the artistic director of the Hamburg City Theater , today's State Opera.

Wymetal's sons Wilhelm (1890–1970) and Erich (1892–1966) also went to the stage. Wilhelm became a choreographer and director, emigrated and worked at the New York Met , in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and in Hollywood . Erich first became a dragoon officer, then tried his hand at acting and finally also became an opera director, from 1937 also at the Vienna State Opera.
