Maria Tuci (born March 12, 1928 in Ndërfushaz near Rrëshen , † October 24, 1950 in Shkodra ) was a postulant of the stigmatines. She died as a result of torture by the Albanian communists. Maria Tuci is one of the Thirty-Eight Martyrs of Albania .

Life

In Shkodra, the young Maria Tuci attended the school of stigmatines, of which she later became a postulant. She was considered to be very beautiful, clever, and firm in her faith.

Albanian communists tried in many different ways to dissuade them from their belief. When this did not succeed, Maria Tuci was arrested on August 10, 1949 in her native Ndërfushez. During her detention, inmates reported that she was severely ill-treated. She was also put naked in a sack with a cat. In a letter she wrote, "All torture can only destroy my body." She died as a result of torture in Shkodra Prison Hospital.

beatification

The beatification of Maria Tuci and 37 other martyrs took place on November 5, 2016 in Shkodra. The Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , Cardinal Angelo Amato , presided over the celebrations on behalf of Pope Francis .
