Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm
The Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm is a German symphony orchestra that gives symphonic concerts several times a year , especially in the area of the city of Ulm .
history
The orchestra was founded as a theater orchestra in the Ulm Theater during the 19th century. The focus was on the musical design of operas and operettas . The orchestra in the former garrison town of Ulm consisted mainly of military musicians . In 1920 the Ulm Theater was affiliated with its own orchestra, which from then on regularly held its own symphony concerts outside of opera and theater productions.
The orchestra now employs 56 musicians (as of 2006) and is classified within the German tariff system for cultural orchestras according to TVK C (source: Deutscher Musikrat , Bonn).

history
Herbert von Karajan was Kapellmeister of the orchestra between 1930 and 1935 . From 1994 to 2011 the orchestra was under the direction of GMD James Allen Gähres . The first Kapellmeister was Philippe Jordan between 1994 and 1998 .

The orchestra is currently led by General Music Director Timo Handschuh and his deputy Nils Schweckendik, the 1st Kapellmeister.
Repertoire and concerts
The orchestra plays in music and dance theater performances in the Ulm Theater and, with its subscription series, also offers music from all epochs of symphonic classical music. The regular highlights of the year round include the New Year's Concert and the Parade and Glacier Concert , which is given in the open air in a park in Neu-Ulm in the summer . In memory of Herbert von Karajan, the orchestra organizes a Herbert von Karajan concert .
