Timo Handschuh was born in Lahr on the western edge of the Black Forest in 1975 and founded his own orchestra in his hometown at the age of 17. His formative teachers were Ludger Lohmann (organ) and Scott Sandmeier (conducting).

While still studying, Handschuh worked as assistant to the choir director and solo repetitor at the Stuttgart State Opera from 2002 , there from 2007 as musical assistant to General Music Director Manfred Honeck , in which position he subsequently led more than 100 performances at the State Opera as Kapellmeister and guest conductor , including Madama Butterfly , Idomeneo , Così fan tutte , Il Trovatore , Le nozze di Figaro , Die Fledermaus , Aida , The Flying Dutchman and Der Freischütz .

Here he directed premieres in musical theater such as Madama Butterfly , Carmen , The Makropulos Case , Ilertrico , Dialogues des Carmélites , Otello and Der Rosenkavalier as well as Turandot and Lohengrin . He also directed the ballet premiere with Roberto Scafati's choreography of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake . In addition to his opera work, Timo Handschuh has never neglected his concert activities, but instead has worked on a large repertoire at the podium of renowned chamber and symphony orchestras, ranging from baroque music in historically informed performance practice through classical and romantic to modern times.

He himself says: "The work in both areas broadens our horizons immensely: opera and concert, singers and instrumental soloists - both areas constantly provide new impulses and stimulate each other."

Since the beginning of the 2013/14 concert season, he has also succeeded Sebastian Tewinkel as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim (SWDKO).
