The Zurich Boys 'Choir is the boys ' choir of Zurich made up of boys and men .
history
The Zurich Boys' Choir was founded by Alphons von Aarburg around 1960. The choir originated in the Roman Catholic parish of St. Franziskus Wollishofen and was called St. Franziskus Boys' Choir until 1976 . To this day (as of 2020) the choir is led by Alphons von Aarburg together with his son Konrad von Aarburg. The choir consists of more than a hundred boys and mostly young men who come from Zurich or the surrounding area and come from all walks of life and denominations .
organization
The choir is not affiliated with a boarding school or a special school, but is operated by a sponsoring association. According to its statutes, this Zurich Boys' Choir Association maintains a singing school and usually a general choir, a concert choir and a traveling choir and thus aims to provide vocational training, personal development and support for boys and young men in the context of choral singing and solo activities .
The Zurich Boys' Choir meet three to four times a week for rehearsals in a rehearsal room in the city of Zurich; The members of the choir spend another two or three weeks in the Singlager in Allgäu to deepen the choir's repertoire.
Artistic focus
Various concert tours have taken the Zurich Boys' Choir through Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Finland, Holland, Portugal, the USA, Russia and China.
Important conductors such as Herbert von Karajan , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Christoph Eschenbach , John Eliot Gardiner , Franz Welser-Möst , Charles Dutoit , Sir Roger Norrington , David Zinman , Armin Jordan , Hiroshi Wakasugi , Gerd Albrecht , Alain Lombard , Ferdinand Leitner , Muhai Tang and artists such as Luciano Pavarotti , Edita Gruberová , Jonas Kaufmann , Kiri Te Kanawa , Kathleen Battle , José van Dam , Vesselina Kasarova , Kurt Moll or the Strasbourg Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic have already played with the Zurich Boys' Choir.
For many years, boy soloists from the Zurich Boys' Choir have regularly participated in performances at the Zurich Opera House . The soloists of the Zurich Boys' Choir have also been guests at the Opéra de Lausanne , Grand Théâtre de Genève , Opéra National de Lyon , Grand Théâtre de Metz, the Shanghai Opera House , the Royal Festival Hall London and at the Salzburg Festival (in the Festspielhaus at the Easter Festival in 1988/89 under Herbert von Karajan , where she performed in Puccini's "Tosca" together with the Berlin Philharmonic , the Vienna State Opera choir and Luciano Pavarotti.). But the soloists have also been hired as musical performers, including the leading roles in the world premiere of the musical "The Black Brothers", where they appeared in 40 performances in front of an audience of more than 40,000.
In 2015, at the invitation of the Tölzer Boys' Choir , the Zurich Boys' Choir sang at the International Boys' Choir Festival Bad Tölz together with the Tölz Boys' Choir and the Wilten Boys' Choir . In the same year the boys' choir also sang at the opening ceremony of the IAAF Diamond League athletics event " Weltklasse Zürich " in front of 25,000 spectators in the Letzigrund stadium .
One focus of the CD productions of the Zurich Boys' Choir is the first recordings of works by Michael Haydn .
Cantaleum Zurich
The wish for the Zurich Boys' Choir to have its own school was a recurring theme among the choir's parents and the choir directors themselves. In 2017, this wish became reality in the form of a cooperation school. The Cantaleum Zurich , founded by Maja Coradi and Konrad von Aarburg (choirmaster at the Zurich Boys' Choir) is a bilingual day school with a musical profile for kindergarten, primary and secondary levels. The school started operations in August 2017 in the historic Sonnenberg house , a former orphanage in the city of Zurich. The school model combines the latest findings from educational research with years of educational experience in the ranks of the Zurich Boys' Choir.
The project receives public support from leading figures from education, science and culture:

The school and kindergarten are open to girls and boys interested in music. Every child at Cantaleum Zurich sings in one of the two partner choirs (boys in the Zurich Boys 'Choir, girls in the Zurich Girls' Choir) and receives individual voice training. The two choirs are independent institutions and continue to be open to children from other schools.
The Cantaleum is operated by Cantaleum Zürich AG, which in turn is supported by a non-profit foundation. The school therefore serves a charitable purpose and is not profit-oriented. The school was largely funded by donations from private sources (over one million Swiss francs).
