Tang Muhai

Tang Muhai ( 湯沐海  /  汤沐海 , Tāng Mùhǎi , * 1949 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese composer and conductor . He was the first conductor to be sent to Europe to study music after China's political opening. Tang Muhai has lived mainly in Europe for decades.

Life

Tang Muhai was born in the year the People's Republic of China was founded. His father is the Chinese film pioneer Tang Xiaodan , his mother Wan Weije is a film editor and writer. During the Cultural Revolution, Tang Muhai served in a barracks in Urumchi in the Chinese People's Army. At first he had received music lessons from his parents; In 1972, in the last phase of the fading cultural revolution, he began studying conducting and composition at the Shanghai Conservatory. In 1979, after completing his studies in Shanghai, he visited Europe for the first time and took a postgraduate course in conducting with Hermann Michael at the Munich University of Music and Theater .

His international career began when Herbert von Karajan invited him to conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker during the 1983–1984 season . This invitation was later repeated. In 1987 Tang Muhai took over as the successor to Claudio Scimone as chief conductor of the Orquestra Gulbenkian in Lisbon , whose reputation he increased in twelve years with international tours and record productions. He made his US debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1988. He was then conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) in Brisbane, and in 2005 was appointed honorary conductor. He was subsequently music director of the Finnish National Opera and conducted the Royal Flanders Philharmonic (deFilharmonie) from 1991 to 1995. From 2006 to 2011 he was conductor and music director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra . In 2010 he was appointed chief conductor of the Belgrade Philharmonic to Belgrade. In addition to his many European commitments, he is chief conductor of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in China , artistic director of the Tianjin Grand Theater and chief conductor of the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra .

In 2002 he received the “ Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition” for his recording of Christopher Rouse's Concert de Gaudí for Guitar and Orchestra .

Tang Muhai is married to the Korean concert pianist Ju Hee Suh and has a daughter born in 2006.
