Claudio Scimone

Claudio Scimone (born December 23, 1934 in Padua ; † September 6, 2018 there ) was an Italian conductor .

Life

Scimone worked as a music critic for the Gazetta del Veneto from 1952 to 1957 and studied conducting with Carlo Zecchi , Dimitri Mitropoulos and Franco Ferrara at the same time . In 1959 he founded the chamber orchestra I Solisti Veneti , which he has directed ever since. He taught chamber music at the conservatories of Venice (1961–67) and Verona (1967–74); 1974–83 he was director of the Padua Conservatory.

Through archival studies and scientific research, Scimone expanded the musical repertoire to include numerous works from the 18th and 19th centuries. He was the first to record all of Muzio Clementi's symphonies and made Tartini's works widely known. He reconstructed Vivaldi's opera Orlando furioso and performed it in Verona in 1979 and in Aix-en-Provence in 1981 . A reconstruction of Albinoni's Il nascimento de l'aurora followed in Venice in 1984. Works from the 20th century were also repeatedly on his program.

In addition to his work as conductor of I Solisti Veneti , Scimone directed the Orquestra Gulbenkian in Lisbon from 1979-86 , where he re-performed Rossini's opera Mosè in Egitto in 1981 . In the same year he made his debut at Covent Garden with a performance of Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore . As a guest conductor he worked a. a. with the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , the English Chamber Orchestra , the Orchester Philharmonique de l'ORTF and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra .

Recordings

Scimone has recorded over 150 records and CDs , many of them first recordings (including Mercadante , Boito , Donizetti , Spontini , Ponchielli ). His Vivaldi discography amounts to over 250 works.

Awards

In 1969 Scimone was awarded the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Memorial Medal . For his recordings he has received the Grand Prix du Disque several times , as well as the Grammy Award , the Prix ​​Mondial du Disque (Montreux) and the Diapason d'or .
