Ulf Söderblom

Ulf Arne Söderblom (born February 5, 1930 in Turku , † February 4, 2016 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish conductor .

Söderblom studied from 1950 to 1953 at the Åbo Akademi in his hometown. After studying conducting from 1954 to 1956 at the Vienna Music Academy with Hans Swarowsky , he obtained his Kapellmeister diploma. After that, his work was closely linked to the Finnish National Opera , as a conductor from 1957 to 1973, from 1970 to 1973 as artistic director , then until 1993 as chief conductor. Since 1967 he has also conducted the Savonlinna Opera Festival . From 1965 to 1968 he led the conducting class at the Sibelius Academy . He was also Artistic Director of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra from 1978 to 1979 and the Sinfonia Lahti from 1984 to 1987.

Through his work at the Finnish National Opera, Söderblom has premiered numerous contemporary Finnish operas, including those by Sallinen , Kokkonen , Heininen and Bergman .

Söderblom has made numerous sound recordings; four of them were named Record of the Year in Finland. In 1973 he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Order , the Finnish State Prize in Music in 1977, the Madetoja Prize in 1988 and the Erik Bergman Prize in 2001.
