Jussi Jalas

Armas Jussi Veikko Jalas (until 1944 Blomstedt ; born June 23, 1908 in Jyväskylä , † October 11, 1985 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish conductor and son-in-law of the composer Jean Sibelius .

Jalas' father was the architect Yrjö (also George ) Blomstedt (1871-1912), who died when Jalas was 3 years old. Jalas studied conducting in Paris. In August 1929 he married Sibelius' fourth daughter Margareta (1908–88), whom he had met in 1924, at the age of 15, as well as her father. From 1930 to 1945 he was a conductor at the Finnish National Theater , then at the Finnish National Opera until 1973. He also directed the first conducting class at the Sibelius Academy from 1943 to 1950 and from 1955 to 1965 . From 1950 to 1955 he was represented by Leo Funtek (1885-1965) due to US tours , with whom Jorma Panula studied during this time .

Jalas also orchestrated a number of Sibelius' piano songs.
