Broadcasting Council of the Bavarian Radio

The Broadcasting Council is the central decision-making and control body of Bavarian Broadcasting . The legal basis for its establishment is Article 5 of the Bavarian Broadcasting Act .

The tasks of the Broadcasting Council are regulated in Article 6 of the Bavarian Broadcasting Act. It is supposed to represent the "interests of the general public in the field of broadcasting" and to ensure that "the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation fulfills its tasks in accordance with the law". For this purpose he "exercises the necessary control right". Its members are obliged to "work for the general interests of broadcasters and broadcasters" and "not be bound by orders".

In accordance with Article 7 of the Act, the Broadcasting Council has extensive information, advice and decision-making rights. He

  • elects the director (simple majority) and has the option of dismissing the director (two-thirds majority),
  • elects five out of seven members of the Board of Directors of Bayerischer Rundfunk ,
  • must approve the proposals of the artistic director for the appointment of the program directors, the administrative director, the technical and legal director, the deputy director, the head of department and the youth protection officer,
  • advises the artistic director on program design and other fundamental questions,
  • approves the business plan and decides to discharge the director,
  • determines the "Program Policies".

Members

The Broadcasting Council has 50 members. They are sent for a period of five years on the one hand by the "significant political, ideological and social groups" named in the Broadcasting Act, and on the other hand the Bavarian State Parliament sends twelve representatives and the Bavarian State Government one. The chairman of the committee has been Lorenz Wolf (Catholic Church) since January 2014 , before that from 2002 Bernd Lenze (Chamber of Crafts). The current council period began on May 1, 2017.
