Hubert Weiger (born April 21, 1947 in Kaufbeuren ) is a German conservationist . Between December 2007 and November 2019 he was chairman of the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) and between 2002 and April 2018 he was also chairman of BUND Nature Conservation in Bavaria .

Life

Weiger passed the Abitur in 1966 at the humanistic grammar school in Günzburg . From 1967 to 1971 he studied forest sciences at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the ETH Zurich with a degree in forestry. In 1976 he passed the Great Forest State Examination (Staatsexamen) . In his dissertation , entitled Experimental studies in northern Bavaria coniferous forest stands on the water balance and the Stickstoffaustrag to nitrogen fertilization , he with the 1986 at Munich University doctorate , he treated forestry hydrological and pedological impact of nitrogen inputs in forest ecosystems .

Between 1973 and 1992 Hubert Weiger was the representative for Northern Bavaria of the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern e. V. and then until 2002 state representative of the Bund Naturschutz and responsible head of all specialist and regional departments of the association as well as head of the state branch office based in Nuremberg. In April 2002 he was elected as the successor to Hubert Weinzierl as chairman of the Bund Naturschutz in Bayern, based in Nuremberg. He resigned from this position in April 2018. He was then elected honorary chairman of the BUND Nature Conservation in Bavaria.

Weiger is a founding member of the “Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e. V. "(BUND). Between 1975 and 2008 he was a member of the BUND's scientific advisory board and spokesman for the BUND's “Agriculture Working Group”. Between December 2007 and November 2019 he was Chairman of the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany. He has been honorary chairman of the BUND since November 2019.

Between 1986 and 1993 Hubert Weiger worked as a lecturer at the University of Kassel (GHK). In 1990/91 he was visiting professor for nature conservation in the urban and landscape planning department at the University of Kassel . Since 1994 he has been an honorary professor at the University of Kassel for nature conservation and sustainable land use in the urban and landscape planning department . From 2002 to 2011 he was a lecturer for nature conservation policy at the Technical University of Munich , department of forest science and resource management.

Weiger has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ecology and Agriculture Foundation since 1989 and a year later became a member of the Bavarian Academy for Rural Areas . Between 1976 and 2004 he was the spokesman for the Nature Conservation Council of the Middle Franconian government . From 1982 to 2002 he was a deputy member and from 2002 to 2019 a full member of the Supreme Nature Conservation Advisory Council at the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment, Health and Consumer Protection . From 2002 to 2011 Weiger was a board member of AgrarBündnis e. V. and, since 2004, the “Center for Forest-Forestry Wood Weihenstephan e. V. ". He has been a member of the Bavarian Broadcasting Council since 2004. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Association of German Scientists (VDW e.V.) and has been a member of the Council for Sustainable Development of the Federal Government since 2013 , currently reappointed from 2020 to 2023, as well as co-editor of the magazine movum . From June 2018 to February 2019, Hubert Weiger was also a member of the Federal Government's Commission for Growth, Structural Change and Employment (Coal Commission). Hubert Weiger is also a representative of the Bund Naturschutz in the Supreme Hunting Advisory Board of the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forests . Since 2019 he has been president of the German Nature Conservation Academy at Lenzen Castle .

honors and awards

In 1986 he received the Paulaner Research Prize . In 2006 he was awarded the Bavarian State Medal for Services to Environment and Health . In 2007 he was honored with the Golden Shamrock of the City of Fürth . In 2009 Weiger received the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in silver, in 2010 the Federal Cross of Merit with Ribbon , and in 2015 the Medal of Honor of the Upper Franconia District . In 2017 Hubert Weiger received the environmental award from the Federal Environment Foundation. Hubert Weiger has been Honorary Chairman of BUND and BUND Nature Conservation in Bavaria since December 2019.
