The Reserva Ecológica Limones-Tuabaquey ( Spanish for Ecological Reserve Limones-Tuabaquey ) is a national park of ecological orientation created in 2009 in the municipality of Sierra de Cubitas in the Cuban province of Camagüey . In addition to protecting rare plant and animal species, it is also intended to serve as a tourist attraction in the region.
The national park is located in the center of the island, about 25 kilometers (as the crow flies) northwest of the city of Camagüey . It covers almost 2000 hectares and is home to a rich flora and fauna . In close cooperation with the scientific department of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago , the biodiversity and environmental conditions in the national park are investigated as a long-term study. Over 600 species of plants, including dozens of different orchids, grow here . Other attractions are wall paintings in the caves in the park.
In the area of this national park there is the sinkhole Hoyo de Bonet , where, for example, unique species of spiders can be found that have so far only been known from Cuba or Brazil .
