occupation

The Princess and the Swineherd is a German fairy tale film by Herbert B. Fredersdorf from 1953. The plot is based on the fairy tale The Swineherd by Hans Christian Andersen .

action

The beautiful Princess Rosenmund is known for giving orders with haughty pride. Many princes who have tried to propose to her in the past have failed because of this attitude. Prince Ehrlichherz, a lovable young man, also goes to the emperor's castle to ask for the princess's hand. In his luggage there are two very special gifts with which he hopes to win the heart of the princess. But the young woman neither has a look for the noble rose, which is covered with dew drops, nor is she touched by the enchanting song of the nightingale she has brought with her. Everything natural is repugnant to her, she is only attracted to artificial things.

The prince then leaves the castle disappointed, but on the way makes the decision to disguise himself as a swineherd and audition again in the castle in costume. There, however, he is initially assigned a job in the pigsty. He succeeds in making a pot that plays the melody “O you dear Augustin…” while on its floor you can see what is currently being cooked in other kitchens. With the help of the court jester Hick, who has become an ally Ehrlichherz, the princess learns about this pot and desperately wants it. The alleged swineherd demands ten kisses from Rosenmund for this gift, which she grants him, albeit reluctantly. When the princess wants to try the pot with her ladies-in- waiting, there is a fire. Prince Ehrlichherz alias the swineherd is the one who protects the princess and her ladies-in-waiting from worse.

Next, Honest Heart manufactures a gun , which can sound the most beautiful songs. The princess is inspired by the instrument and wants it at all costs. This time the alleged swineherd demands a hundred kisses as payment. Before the princess has redeemed this completely, her father, the emperor, enters the room and punishes Rosenmund for having to marry the man she kisses. When it turns out that the swineherd is actually Prince Ehrlichherz, the surprise is great. However, father and daughter are very happy that things have turned out well, and nothing stands in the way of a happy wedding celebration.

Production and difference to the fairy tale

The film was produced in a makeshift studio in Berlin. The outdoor shots were taken around Charlottenburg Palace , Marienfelde City Estate and Grunewald Hunting Lodge . The Princess and the Swineherd premiered on October 4, 1953 in the Federal Republic of Germany and on December 25, 1954 in the GDR . The film was also released on DVD in English.

In the fairy tale the emperor beats the princess with a slipper when he catches her kissing with the “swineherd”. Both have to leave his empire. The alleged swineherd then presents himself to the crying princess as who he really is: Prince Ehrlichherz, whose advertising she had rejected. But now he no longer wants her and slams the door to his kingdom in her face. The princess stands sadly in front of the gate and sings "O dear Augustine, everything is gone ..." .

criticism

"Children's film produced with modest means, the design of which, despite some formal deficiencies, does justice to the child's receptivity."
