Ida Wüst (born October 10, 1884 in Frankfurt am Main ; † October 4, 1958 in Berlin ) was an actress whose career high was in the 1920s and 1930s at Universum Film AG (Ufa).

Life

Wüst discovered the world of theater early on. After attending the Lyzeum in Frankfurt / Main, Wüst took acting lessons from Thessa Klinghammer and received her first engagement at the City Theater of Colmar at the age of 16 , which was followed by further work in Bromberg and from 1904 in Leipzig . In 1907 she became a member of the ensemble of the Lessing Theater in Berlin, where she became a sought-after actress in trouser roles and comedies, and celebrated successes in the Berlin premiere of Heinrich Ilgenstein's chamber music .

Through acting, Wüst met her fellow actor and later husband Bruno Kastner , with whom she wrote scripts from 1919, and whose wife she remained until 1924.

Ida Wüst played her first major film role in 1922/23 in the four-part silent film Tragedy of Love 1 - 4 , which was followed by several other silent films. In contrast to many of her silent film colleagues, Wüst was also able to celebrate further great successes in sound film, which earned her the nickname “Die Wüsten Ida” in the 1930s. She also remained loyal to the theater, where her stage successes gave further impetus to her career.

The Second World War brought a slump in her career. During the war years she played only a few roles in film and theater. 1945 seemed to be the end of her career.

In 1946 Wüst's application for denazification was rejected because she allegedly denounced fellow actors like Eduard von Winterstein to the Gestapo during the Nazi regime . It was not until 1949 that Ida Wüst was classified as “exonerated”, whereupon she played sprightly ladies, grandmothers and schemers in several films in the 1950s. Ida Wüst also returned to the theater, but was no longer a member of an ensemble.

In her career, Wüst stood by the side of all the great stars of her time. She shot with Heinz Rühmann , the Comedian Harmonists , Hans Albers , Peter Lorre , Paul Henckels , Käthe Dorsch , Hans Moser , Hedy Lamarr , Paul Kemp and Theo Lingen .

On October 4, 1958, Ida Wüst died of complications from a stroke , which was accompanied by pneumonia . Her grave is located in the cemetery of the Evangelical Church Community in Groß Glienicke .
