Bruno Richard Otto Kastner (born January 3, 1890 in Forst (Lausitz) , † June 30, 1932 in Bad Kreuznach ) was a German actor who appeared primarily in silent films . He was considered one of the most popular German film actors of his time.

Life

Bruno Kastner was born in 1890 as the son of tax collector Paul Ferdinand Richard Kastner and his wife Ida Elisabeth Emma, nee. Voigt, born in Forst. After attending grammar school in Fürstenwalde , Kastner went to the military, where he stayed for only 17 days due to unfit for service. He then took acting lessons from the actor Paul Biensfeldt in Berlin and was then engaged by the Harburg City Theater. After some time on touring stages, Kastner worked from 1911 to 1921 as a choir singer and actor at the Meinhard and Bernauer theaters in Berlin.

Ascent

The outbreak of the First World War brought the unfit for service Kastner the breakthrough in the film. All actors who were fit for military service were drafted, which made actors a rare commodity. In 1914, Bruno Kastner was discovered by the Danish director Urban Gad , who took on a role for him in the comedy Engelein and the follow-up film Engelein's wedding alongside Asta Nielsen . The young, good-looking Kastner with a winning smile quickly became a heartthrob, to whom the post office delivered the love letters from his female fans in laundry baskets. The male audience found less flattering terms such as clothes hangers and sparked a lively discussion about Kastner in newspapers and film magazines. In 1921 Bruno Kastner was voted Germany's best actor. The following year he founded his own film company, with which he was able to present himself even better. Kastner was first married to actress Ida Wüst from 1918 to 1924 , with whom he also stood in front of the camera and wrote scripts.

descent

After Bruno Kastner had a serious motorcycle accident in Lugano in 1924 , from which he never fully recovered, the star of the beautiful Bruno began to decline. In addition, as he grew older, he was denied the roles of a young and seductive dandy , with which he had particularly impressed his female audience. Finally, the emergence of talkies made it difficult for the actor, who was severely impaired by a speech impediment, to keep his fans. Kastner suffered greatly from his dwindling popularity - on June 30, 1932, when he was only 42, he put an end to his life by hanging in a hotel room in Bad Kreuznach .

Bruno Kastner was married to Lisl Tirsch-Kastner for the second time since 1925 . Their estate is owned by Sebastian Kuboth .
