action

Mechtildis, the daughter of the Lord on Einsiedel, learns from her father, who is lying on his deathbed, that he was once king of a small kingdom. He wore the crown of Kerkyra on his head before, as her father claims, he was forced to abdicate through a betrayal of allegiance by his direct successor and thereby deprived of the reign of his kingdom. That was many years ago. And yet Mechtildis is furious and swears bitter vengeance to atone for the betrayal of her father.

She travels to Kerkyra and meets King Basil at court. To get to know him better, she asks the monarch, whom she introduces as an artist, to be allowed to paint him. During this time together, the young woman and the person she is portraying fall in love with each other. Nevertheless, Mechtildis feels bound by her oath of vengeance towards her father and wants to stab Basil. But she learns that Basil's father never betrayed von Mechtildis. But the woman has long since hired some gypsies to complete her work of revenge. Knowing that they were terribly mistaken, Mechtildis throws himself in their way in the king's mask and dies in his place.

Reviews

“There is so much dramatic expression in her [Mady Christians'] playing that only very great artists have. Everything that is artificial is far from her. The figure she embodies breathes warm, pulsating life. (...) Mady Christians is enchantingly beautiful and of an elegance in appearance that proves good taste as well as elegant feeling. (...) It is very gratifying that she has such an excellent partner as Erich Kaiser-Titz. As for the action, it can be described as excellent ... "
