Stephen McNeil (born November 10, 1964 in Annapolis Royal , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian politician . Since 2003 he has represented the constituency of Annapolis in the Nova Scotia House of Representatives , and since 2007 he has led the Liberal Party of Nova Scotia . On October 22, 2013, he became Prime Minister of Nova Scotia .

Life

Stephen McNeil was born on November 10, 1964, the twelfth of 17 children. His mother, Theresa McNeil, was the first female sheriff in Canada and a holder of the Order of Nova Scotia . McNeil graduated from Nova Scotia Community College and ran a small home appliance company in Bridgetown between 1988 and 2003 .

McNeil ran for the 1999 election to the Nova Scotia House of Representatives, but lost to Frank Chipman of the Progressive Conservative Party . In the next election on August 5, 2003, he won the constituency of Annapolis with 50.83% of the vote against Chipman. In the 2006 election he was re-elected with 56.20%.

On January 30, 2007, McNeil announced his candidacy for party leadership. At the party conference on April 28, 2007 in Dartmouth , he won the most votes in the first ballot. Two competitors were eliminated after this ballot and agreed to support Diana Whalen from Halifax. In the second ballot, McNeil prevailed with 718 against 650 votes.

In the elections on June 9, 2009, McNeil was able to improve his personal result to 73.70%. In total, the party won eleven seats and thus achieved the status of the official opposition. In the following elections on October 8, 2013, he again managed to improve to 75.88%. These elections were also a success at the provincial level, as the party won an absolute majority with 33 out of 51 seats.

McNeil was born on October 22, 2013 along with his Cabinet from the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia , John James Grant , sworn in Annapolis Royal. This marked the first time since 1954 that a swearing-in ceremony took place outside the provincial capital, Halifax .
