Sidney Alexander "Sandy" Silver (born October 15, 1969 in Antigonish , Nova Scotia ) is a Canadian politician . He has been Prime Minister of the Yukon Territory since December 3, 2016 . In addition, since 2012 he has held the office of chairman of the Yukon Liberal Party .

Political career

On October 11, 2011, Silver was elected to the 33rd Yukon Legislative Assembly. He prevailed against Steve Nordick with 48.8% of the vote, who previously held the seat in the Klondike constituency in rural Yukon. Silver was a member of several standing committees in the Legislative Assembly, including the Election Committee and the Implementing Ordinance Committee.

After the previous chairman of the Yukon Liberal Party, Darius Elias , resigned, Silver temporarily took over the office on August 17, 2017. Since Elias remained as an independent MP in the Legislative Assembly, Silver was subsequently the only MP of the Yukon Liberal Party. In 2014, Silver officially became the new chairman of the Yukon Liberal Party.

On November 7, 2016, Silver was re-elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly, this time with 59.1% of the vote. After the party had only one seat in parliament since the last election, it won 11 of the 19 seats. The party's main focus in the election campaign was economic diversification, environmental protection and improving relations with the First Nations . On December 3, 2016, he and his cabinet were sworn in. He is the ninth person in the office of Prime Minister of Yukon to succeed Darrell Pasloski , who lost to Silver and his party in the election. In addition to serving as Prime Minister of Yukon, he also holds the positions of Finance Minister and Minister of Executive Council Affairs. Like the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , he filled his cabinet equally with men and women.

Personal

Sandy Silver was born in Antigonish, where his parents ran a laundry for over 40 years. His three siblings all took up medical professions. Silver himself attended St. Francis Xavier University in his native city, from which he graduated with degrees in mathematics and psychology . He later studied education at the University of Maine , graduating in 1996, and then worked as a math teacher at the Robert Service School in Dawson City , where he has lived since 1998. In his youth he played sports such as basketball and is also a passionate musician. He learned to play guitar and drums in his parents' basement.
