Jan Roth (cameraman)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jan Roth (born November 10, 1899 in Náchod , then Austria-Hungary , † October 4, 1972 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovakian cameraman for domestic and German films.

Live and act

After attending school at the beginning of the First World War, Jan Roth joined the Austro-Hungarian Navy because he wanted to train as an electrical engineer. After 1918 back in civil life, he went to the German Theater in Prague and got the position of illuminator . In 1923, Roth made his first contact with the cinema through Karl Anton . In 1926 he appeared in front of the camera with a tiny role in the feature film Lásky Kacenky Strnadové and in the same year became chief lighting technician in a small film studio until the end of the silent film era. In this role, Roth was also involved in the Czech silent film classic Erotik .

With the beginning of the sound film era, Jan Roth switched to behind the camera. He became the assistant to Otto Heller , who formed a solid team with the director Karel Lamač and the film star Anny Ondra . After a time as a simple camera operator, Roth began to produce films independently in the mid-1930s and also made several German films, some of which were made in Czechoslovakia. Even after the smashing of the rest of the Czech Republic in 1939, the accomplished picture designer did not experience a slump in his career - on the contrary: From 1940 to the beginning of 1945 Jan Roth was extremely busy and was behind the camera in a number of Reich German productions (mostly made in Prague). Roth was also responsible as chief cameraman for two of Helmut Käutner's great audiences , Auf Wiedersehn, Franziska and Wir macht Musik .

Even the liberation from Nazi rule in his country did not bring any disadvantages to the Prague-elect, given his close collaboration with filmmakers of the Hitler regime in 1945. Roth continued his screen career unscathed in the same year and had his greatest successes with fairy tale films and one with the Czech "national hero", the soldier Schwejk ( Melde obediently ), at the center of the action. When Käutner traveled to Czechoslovakia in 1965 for the outdoor recordings of his television production Robin Hood, the noble robber , Roth collaborated again with the German star director. Shortly before the age of 70, Jan Roth ended his decade-long career. In 1968 he was honored as an "Honored Artist" (Czech: Zasloužilý umělec ) for his life's work .
