occupation

Sender unknown is a German fiction film from 1950 by Akos von Ratony . Old star Henny Porten can be seen here in her first post-war role, at the same time her only production in the Federal Republic of Germany. At her side, Bruni Löbel and Cornell Borchers play other leading roles.

action

The old director of a girls' school at the turn of the century leads an iron regiment with all human kindness, as was usual in the imperial era of Wilhelm II. The teachers are exposed to many pranks and jokes by the coquettish students. A young teacher is more than dissatisfied with her corresponding working conditions. Out of a mood of considerable resignation, she wrote a letter that she had actually only written for herself. More out of cockiness than out of reason, she names Mr. Brown in Canada to whom the letter has written; a name she took from a textbook for commercial correspondence. In fact, it just so happened that this letter was sent to the addressee without a sender. One day that Mr. Freddy Brown appears in Germany and with the help of his cousin Alfred Braun, who lives in Hamburg, finds the anonymous sender after some back and forth. Several entanglements promptly arise before the German teacher and the attractive Canadian get to know each other and fall in love.

Production notes

Sender unknown was shot in the Real Film Studios in Hamburg-Wandsbek in the second half of 1949 and premiered on February 10, 1950 in Düsseldorf. The Berlin premiere took place on March 7, 1950.

Mathias Matthies designed the film structures. Gyula Trebitsch took over the production management. His wife Erna Sander designed the costumes, assisted by Irms Pauli . Werner Pohl was responsible for the sound.

Although Porten is named first, her role in this film is rather small.

Immediately beforehand, Bruni Löbel and Cornell Borchers stood in front of the camera , also in 1949, in the American film It began with a kiss, made in Berlin .

The material has already been filmed several times: 1938 in Hungary by Ladislao Vajda , in 1940 in Italy by Vittorio De Sica , and in 1945 by Fedor Ozep as a Spanish-Portuguese coproduction.

Reviews

In the Frankfurter Rundschau , the critic stated in 1950 that the plot of the film was insignificant, “but witty pointed”.

"Swans from the milieu of a girls' school - with student pranks, teacher caricatures and a somewhat tricky love story."
