occupation

Visit out of the blue is a German comedy of confusion by Ferdinand Dörfler from 1959.

action

John Underhower, president of a US company, bets his colleagues for $ 20,000 that there are ghosts. To prove it, he is supposed to bring a real ghost to America. He once spent his childhood near Waldenfels Castle, which he now buys in the hope of a castle ghost. His cousin Hans Unterhuber, who told him about wealth and castle property, meanwhile works as a museum guide at the castle. His only colleagues are the young Monika and his nephew Beppi. When John announces that he is going to visit the castle on a card, the three decide to fool John into a rich family.

John also wants to trick his cousin and teams up with a circus that stopped not far from the castle. He poses as an artist and moves into the castle with the circus. John's daughter Eve, who is studying painting in Munich and wanted to make some drawings on site, has also arrived here. The toy maker Peter follows her as stubbornly as if in love, but Eve regularly rejects him. Only when they are both locked in the castle's pantry during a guided tour do they reconcile. In the chamber she also finds Hans, who actually wants to throw her out, but has to save face in front of John. He pretends to be a duke and Eve and Peter and both are allowed to stay at the castle. Meanwhile, Monika plays a Hungarian countess, while Hans plays the castle owner in front of John.

It comes to a boozy night, which leads to the arrival of the responsible domain administrator from Säuerlich the next day. He wants to convince himself that everything is going well on site. Hans said to John that a white woman who can react very nastily to foreigners haunted the castle at night. John in turn hopes to be able to catch a real ghost, but suspects that someone of the castle staff is simply playing a ghost. Even before Säuerlich, Hans had to hold on to his ghost theory, and so Hans, Beppi and Säuerlich went on a ghost hunt the next night. Meanwhile, John has put the circus staff in creepy clothes, and so it haunts every corner at night, while John follows the white woman and can finally catch her with a lasso - it is Monika, with whom John has long since fallen in love. Eve and Peter also get together after they fell out jealously because of Monika's close contact with John, her father. Sourly, on the other hand, at night by strictly following all monitoring rules, no irregularities can be detected, while Hans and Beppi are frightened by the numerous “ghosts”. When Sauerlich wants to reprimand both of them, John appears and dissolves that he as the new owner has long been in charge of the castle. He appoints the grateful Hans as the new domain administrator and Beppi becomes the new castellan. With Monika in the prepared ghost cage, John finally moves away.

criticism

In 1959 the film-dienst criticized that “because nothing right is happening… the whole thing just drips away as a laboriously funny joke. Germany's largest castle, Burghausen an der Salzach, is beautiful and equally charming and romantic from every angle. One regrets not to see a nicer game rolling against this background. "

The lexicon of international films published by film-dienst in 1990 called the film a “poor mix of content between poor and rich cousins”. A visit out of the blue is "a tediously funny slapstick film".

Cinema found that the game of confusion in the film “is rather boring today. Conclusion: The haunted castle posse lacks spirit. "
