Al Hoosman

Alston James Hoosman (born October 4, 1918 in Waterloo , Iowa , † October 25, 1968 in Munich ) was an American boxer and actor .

Life

Hoosman was an amateur heavyweight boxer and won the title fight for the National Golden Gloves at Madison Square Garden in 1939 . He belonged to the same boxing stable as Joe Louis , against whom he also fought an exhibition match in 1948. In November 1940, Hoosman was drafted into the army, where he had to undergo eye surgery. From 1943 he lived in Queensland , where he still appeared as a boxer, but also led the Doctor Carver Service Club for US Army members. Towards the end of the 1940s he was transferred to Germany, where he also settled after his discharge from the army. As a boxer, his greatest successes were victories over Lee Savold , Joe Weidin ( Josef Weidinger ) and Tommy Farr .

Hoosman opened a bar and was involved in "helping colored and orphaned children"; around 1960 he founded the organization "Cause" with the same target group.

Between 1952 and 1967, Hoosman appeared in several films. His grave is in the north cemetery in Munich.
