Dubarry is a German operetta film from 1951 that has been relocated to the present and directed by Georg Wildhagen . It is loosely based on the operetta of the same name by composer Carl Millöcker from 1879.
action
Jeanne Fabiani is a celebrated singer as Madame Dubarry, whose career was supported by a generous sponsor. When a critic complains that she lacks any heart tones, she wants to prove that she can become a big star again without outside help and starts all over again. She changes her name, changes her appearance and starts as a little singer again. In the process, she falls in love with a supposedly poor young man, who is, however, a major automobile manufacturer and is secretly promoting her career. Now she is coming back to the top as Dubarry, and love has made her a perfect artist, which means that all critics are converted.
Production notes
Filming began in August 1951. The studio in Hamburg-Wandsbek served as the studio , while the exterior shots were taken in Hamburg. Reinhold Schünzel was also involved in the directing work without being mentioned as a co-director. Willi A. Herrmann and Heinrich Weidemann were responsible for the buildings . The premiere took place on November 30, 1951 in the Hahnentor-Lichtspiele in Cologne.
Reviews
The lexicon of international film judges: "Millöcker's folk melodies make the somewhat clumsy performances of the singer-actors in the film by the DEFA specialist for music films, Wildhagen, a decent entertainment."
