Mendel Rosenblum (* 1962 ) is an American computer scientist and professor at Stanford University . He is known for developing virtual machines , that is, simulation programs for computers and operating systems.

Rosenblum studied mathematics at the University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in 1984. This was followed by a master's degree in 1989 at the University of California, Berkeley , where he received his doctorate in computer science in 1991. He is an Associate Professor at Stanford. From 1994 to 1996 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .

In Stanford he and his group developed the simulation program SimOS .

In 2002 Rosenblum received the Mark Weiser Award .

He was Chief Scientist and Co-Founder at VMware , but resigned in 2008 after his wife Diane Greene was replaced as Chief Executive Officer . Rosenblum, Diane Greene, Scott Devine , Edward Y. Wang and Edouard Bugnion founded VMware in 1998. Wang and Devine are Principal Engineers there.

He is involved in the FLASH project in Stanford (2012), a new operating system for multiprocessor computer systems with shared memory (Shared Memory Multiprocessor Systems).

In 2009 he, Edouard Bugnion, Scott Devine, Jeremy Sugerman and Edward Wang received the ACM Software System Award for VMware Workstation 1.0 for Linux. In 2008 he became a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and received the ACM SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering .

In 2011 he and his wife Diane Greene donated $ 3 million to the Marvin Rosenblum Professorship in Mathematics at the University of Virginia in honor of Rosenblum's father, Marvin Rosenblum, who taught at the university for 45 years.

In 2014 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
