Where are you? (to German Where are you? ) is an English-language song by the British singer Imaani and the contribution of the United Kingdom for Euro Vision Song Contest 1998 . It was written by Scott English, Phil Mankiza and Simon Stirling.

song

In Where Are You? the protagonist asks from a first-person perspective where his counterpart is ( "Everyday is a question mark - where are you?" ). In the chorus he expresses what he would do to find it again ( “I would drive through the rain (to find you) / Walk a desert plain” ), but also that it is not possible for him to “cut the chains " ( " You could unlock these chains (I'm tied to) ").

In addition to the Eurovision and the single version, there is also an alternative version that includes some jazzy instrumentation. There are also several remixes.

Eurovision Song Contest

Imaani, who previously worked mainly as a background singer for other artists, took part in the British qualifying for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 . The A Song for Europe event was held on March 15, 1998, and Where Are You? was able to prevail with four thousand votes ahead of the other three applicants. Imaani represented the United Kingdom in the competition in their own country, as Katrina and the Waves won for the country last year .

Where are you? was presented there as 16th of 25 songs - between the Romanian contribution Eu cred by Mălina Olinescu and the Cypriot song Genesis by Michalis Hatzigiannis . In addition to Imaani, there were two female and two male background singers on stage, the orchestra was conducted by James McMillan. The performance drew huge applause in the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.

In the evaluation, the song received the maximum number of twelve points four times, namely from Croatia , Israel , Romania and Turkey , as well as two ten-point evaluations. The scoring of 1998 is one of the narrower ones in the history of the competition, the winner was not decided until the last vote. Where are you? , which had previously been in third place, was able to advance to second place due to the Macedonian ranking, as the previously leading Maltese song The One that I Love by Chiara Siracusa did not receive any points. This also decided the victory of the Israeli entry Diva from Dana International .

After the competition

Imaani (2008)

As a result of the competition, Where Are You? to a smaller hit. The single reached fifteenth place on the UK charts , making the song her most successful (and only) solo listing to date. In Flanders , the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium , ranked twelfth, and in the Dutch Top 40 even eighth. In addition to Where Are You? even the song Something's Changing still exists.

Despite the success in the Eurovision Song Contest and in the charts, the record company EMI decided against continuing to work with Imaani, so Where Are You? did not appear on any album of the singer, but only on a few compilations.

In 1999 Imaani appeared with the song as a pause filler in the Dutch preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest. Even today she is still a frequent guest at Eurovision events, for example at the 2009 preview party for the Eurovision Song Contest in London .
