Sidney Chalhoub

Sidney Chalhoub (* 1957 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian historian .

Chalhoub studied history at Lawrence University (1979), obtained a master's degree from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (1984) and received his doctorate in 1989 from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), where he also worked as adjunct professor . Since July 2015 he has been a history professor at Harvard University .

In his writings, Chalhoub mainly deals with the history of Rio de Janeiro, with the abolition of slavery and with the Brazilian national writer Machado de Assis . In 1997 he won the Jabuti Prize with his book Cidade febril . Other well-known works are Trabalho, lar e botequim (1986) and A história contada (1998).
